We have found many different spellings of the name Greenis.  From previous generations, and where we begin, the name is spelt GRYNAEUS but as generations go by it changes from Grinius, Greeniaus, Greenious, Greenius, Grinnis, Grinis and our Greenis.  You will find all spellings through this history.  

1. JOHANN CONRAD GRYNAEUS born in approximately 1668 in Europe, the son of Johann Conrad Grynaeus and Anna Katherina Hager.  He died in 1745.  I have no information on a spouse but they had 2 children:

2.    SIMON CONRAD GRYNAEUS/GRYNEUS (JOHANN1)is first located in Postorf, in the Northern Alsace Region in approximately 1737.  This is now North East France but at the time was German Territory, close to Strasbourg not far from the Rhine River.   He married 3 times.  His first wife a young widow by the name of ANNA REGINA LUCIUS JUNCKER.  She was born in approximately 1707.  She had 2 daughters born 1726-1732 and her first husband died in 1733.  I have no date of marriage for SIMON and ANNA.  For their trip to the New World they would have picked up a sailing barge some where along the Rhine and proceed to Rotterdam.  Their sailing vessel "The James and Janet" would then sail to Leith Scotland (now called Edinburgh).  According to research, passengers were NOT allowed to disembark but the vessel stayed in Port awaiting ideal conditions and favourable winds.  It is believed that ANNA REGINA died in approximately 1759 as SIMON married ANNA MARGARETHA RAB on June 19, 1760.  He married under the name of SIMON CONRAD GRINEUS.  SIMON married again to a MARGARETHA KLAPPER.  I have no information on her either.  Unfortunately we have no death information on SIMON but believe that he is buried in Pensylvania.  

Children of SIMON CONRAD GRYNAEUS and ANNA REGINA LUCIUS JUNCKER are:

ANNA CHRISTINA GRYNEUS was born on April 24, 1737.  She was baptized on April 24, 1737 and died on October 16, 1738.

JON JACOB GRYNEUS was born in approximately August 1739 and was baptized on Aug 13, 1739 and died on January 11, 1747.

iii.

 DOROTHEA GRYNEUS was born in approximately February or March 1742 as she  was baptized on March 7, 1742.

MARIA CHRISTINA GRINEUS was born in approximately 1745

SCHARLOTTA GRINEUS was born in approximately 1746

Descendants of Simon Conrad Grineus

3. SEBASTIAN GRINEUS (SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born in October of 1761 in Pennsylvania.  His name seems to be spelt many different way. KRINIUS and GRINIUS.  SEBASTIAN married EVE (EVA) WILL on April 6, 1790 at Berks, Reading, Schwartzwald Reformed Church in Pennsylvania.  EVA is the daughter of  JOHAN DANIEL WILL and ANNA MARIA FRY.  From information obtained 4 of their children appear to have been born in Pennsylvania but no mention of ELIZABETH.   Sometime after August of 1800 they migrated from Pennsylvania to the Niagara Falls area.  An early newspaper clipping reveals that SABASTAIN and a brother, DANIEL, were 2 of a British Colony arriving from Pennsylvania.  He worked as a weaver for a number of years prior to receiving his land grant.  The crown Patent was originally granted July 1, 1808 for Lot 34 Con 2 South of Dundas Street.  The family Cemetery Plot is at Spring Creek Cemetery, Clarkson Rd. N in Mississauga, Ontario.  SEBASTIAN died on May 22, 1847.  EVE died on March 17, 1844, both are buried in the family plot in Spring Creek Cemetery.

VALENTIN GRUENIUS, born February 8, 1791.  He died on August 23, 1793 in Berks County, Reading, Pennsylvania.

ELIZABETH GRINIUS, born in approximately 1796.  She married JAMES KELLY and died in approximately 1832.  JAMES died in 1835.

SUSANNA GRINIUS, born on April 29, 1800 she was christened on Aug 9, 1800 at Berks, Reading, Schwartzwald Reformed Church, Pennsylvania.  She married to the Unknown PEER and died in 1844.

CATHERINE A. GRINIUS, born in approximately 1802.  She married HIRAM OLIPHANT, son of Peter Oliphant and Elizabeth Scofield. CATHERINE died on July 29, 1854.

Descendants of Sebastian Grineus

4.  DANIEL GREENIAUS (SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1was born on December 25, 1793 in Bucks County Pennsylvania.  Once in Canada he met and married MARY MCMULLEN, who was born in approximately 1799.  DANIEL died on July 17, 1863 and MARY died on January 29, 1877.  Both are buried in Spring Creek Cemetery, Mississauga, Ontario.   Click here for Census information.

WILLIAM GREENIAUS, born November 27, 1820.

ii.

MICHAEL GREENIAUS, born October 31, 1822.  He was a carpenter and never married.  On May 26, 1873 he died and buried in Spring Creek Cemetery, Mississauga, Ontario.

SIMON GREENIAUS, born on January 20, 1825.  We have no information on him.

HIRAM ALBERT GREENIAUS, born on October 7, 1826.

ELIZABETH GREENIAUS, born on March 15, 1828.  

vi.

SYLVESTER GREENIAUS, born October 18, 1833.  It is believed that he was a bachelor, as his death registration stated he was single, and farmed with his brother ISAIAH.  Crown Patent Land believed to be Lot 1 Con 2 S.D.S.  This property is now dissected by train tracks and is now the site of Sheridan Nurseries tree farm.  SYLVESTER died on February 2, 1911.  Click here for census information.

ALMYRA GREENIAUS, born on April 8, 1844.  She never married and died on June 19, 1897 in Trafalgar, Ontario.

xi.

ALVIRA GREENIAUS, born on April 8, 1844.  She was married twice.  First being to EDWIN CHURCH, son of Orange and Susan Ferrand Church on November 5, 1890.  I have not been able to find any children as of yet.  EDWIN died on October 14, 1900 in Streetsville, Ontario.  ALVIRA remarried on February 16, 1904 to FRED CREIGHTON GLYNN, son of William Glynn and Sarah Varty.  FRED died on June 8, 1915 in Cardiff, Ontario.  ALVIRA died on January 21, 1921 in Orangeville, Ontario. 

5.  JOHANN PETER GREENIAUS (SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born in approximately 1797 in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania.  He was Christened on June 4, 1797 in Berks, Reading, Schwartzwald Reformed Church, Pennsylvania.  He married ELIZABETH ANN OLIPHANT, daughter of Peter Oliphant and Elizabeth Scofield, who was born in November 21, 1803 in New York.  She died on May 28, 1866 and JOHANN died in 1871.

Descendants of Daniel Greeniaus

6.  WILLIAM GREENIAUS (DANIEL4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1was born on November 27, 1820.  When he was 17 he joined the Mackenzie Rebellion and was a member of the Montgomery force and served at Niagara.  Upon returning from duty he located in Milton, prior to Halton being a county, moved to Villa Nova, where in about 1841 he met and married ELLEN WEALTHY BUCK.  She was the daughter of ROBERT BUCK, and related to the Buck family of Brantford. Seven years after his first child was born he moved his family and settled east of Oakville, Ontario.  I'm unsure of her date of death, but ELLEN died prior to 1864 when WILLIAM remarried to MARY WELLS, on February 28, 1864 in Waterford, Ontario.  MARY is the daughter of Hiram and Mary Wells of Waterford.   I haven't come across any children born to WILLIAM and MARY.  WILLIAM died on November 9, 1901 and is buried in St. Judes Cemetery, Oakville, Ontario.

WILLIAM W. GREENIS was born on June 10, 1850.  He died on August 23, 1850 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Waterford. 

7.  HIRAM ALBERT GREENIS ((DANIEL4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born on October 7, 1826.  He married Eleanor Case who was born in 1832.  HIRAM died on August 8, 1896.  ELEANOR died on January 29, 1890.  Both are buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

JOHN HENRY GREENIS, born on March 27, 1856 and died on December 10, 1881, family history states that he died on the day he was to be married.

8.    ELIZABETH GREENIAUS (DANIEL4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born on March 15, 1828.   She married in approximately 1856 to JOHN WILLIAM "HENRY" JOHNSON, who was born in March of 1821 in Lincoln County, Ontario.   HENRY died on February 15, 1891 in Townsend, Ontario. ELIZABETH remarried on  April 18, 1894 in Walpole, Ontario to MALCOLM MCLELLAND.    MALCOLM died on January 26, 1904.

9.  LUCINDA GREENIAUS (DANIEL4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born on July 31, 1835.  On January 8, 1873 she married JOHN PHENIX.  JOHN was born in approximately 1834.  It is not known how, when or why JOHN arrived in Canada but he apparently was a sailor with the Royal Navy until he was injured in a fall from the ships rigging.  As a result of that injury he received a pension, and this is likely when he came to Canada. In 1877 JOHN traveled North to the Huntsville - Novar area, and located his land at Lots 12 & 13 Con 6 Bethune Township, being 10 miles from Novar and 6 miles from Kearney.  It was his intention to clear the land for farming and to raise pure bred Herford cattle.  In late fall of 1878 they all headed north to their new property.  That winter they shared a cabin on the adjoining Lot 11, and while still living with their neighbours their second child was born.  JOHN eventually cleared some land and built their log home some time later that year.  When somewhat settled, John returned to Southern Ontario, probably to the farm of his brothers-in-laws, Sylvester and Isaiah, and got 2 cows and a bull and walked them home.  The original log home has since been restored.  When it was recently added to, newspapers dated 1885 were found stuffed in the walls, and were likely used for insulation.  LUCINDA died on September 24, 1904.  JOHN died in January 3, 1907 in Bethune, Ontario.  Both JOHN and LUCINDA are buried in Kearney Cemetery, Ontario.

10.    MARIA GREENIAUS (DANIEL4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born on June 11, 1838.  She married WILLIAM HENRY TAYLOR on November 6, 1866 in Walpole Township, Ontario.

MARY CATHERINE TAYLOR was born on October 1869 in Glanford. Ontario.

iii.

ALBERT EDWARD TAYLOR was born on October 27, 1871 in Wentworth, Ontario.  At the time of his death he was a single farmer living in Hamilton.  He died on May 13, 1929 of a cerebral hemorrhage.  He is buried in Hagersville.

iv.

MARIA MATILDA TAYLOR, born on July 10, 1876 in Wellington, Ontario.

v.

LAURA TAYLOR born approximately 1885 in Hamilton, Ontario.  She married JOHN NELSON on September 11, 1907 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

12.  GAYLORD GREENIAUS (JOHANN4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born on October 4, 1827.  He was married twice.  His first wife, he married on April 11, 1854, was SELINA MERIGOLD.  She was born in approximately 1834 and died on November 13, 1855.  He married a second time to Catherine Jane Kenney, who was born on February 9, 1832 in Trafalgar, Ontario.  She is the daughter of Peter Kenney and Sarah Shain.  On September 27, 1893 and CATHERINE died on May 2, 1920.  Both are buried in Clarkson Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario.

14.   JANE AMANDA GREENIAUS (JOHANN4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born on November 5, 1831.  On January 1, 1851 she married ROBERT K. FREEMAN.  Census reports ROBERT was an "agent" and he died on Janaury 24, 1908 in Toronto, Ontario.  JANE died on April 25, 1908.

15.CYNTHIA CAROLINE GREENIAUS(WILLIAM5,DANIEL4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born on April 1, 1845.  On May 31, 1864 she married THOMAS HINTON, son of Henry Hinton and Jemima Langtry.  THOMAS was born on February 2, 1841 and was the master of "the Louella", a small sailing vessel.  CYNTHIA was very active in the Salvation Army and was well known as Grandma Hinton.  CYNTHIA died on December 8, 1929.  THOMAS died on January 26, 1915.  Both are buried in St. Judes Cemetery, Oakville.  Click here for census information.

16.    DANIEL STARR GREENIS (WILLIAM5,DANIEL4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born in approximately 1847.  In 1869 he married ELIZA DAVIDSON.  ELIZA was born in approximately 1841 and died on April 28, 1911 in Port Hope, Ontario.  Daniel died on June 5, 1917 and both are buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Port Hope.

17.  THOMAS IRWIN GREENIS (HIRAM5,DANIEL4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1 was born on April 14, 1857.  He married MINNIE MARY MOFFATT on February 1, 1892 in Sarnia.  MINNIE was born in approximately 1870.  THOMAS worked for the Imperial Oil refinery as a blacksmith for many years.  On November 7, 1937 THOMAS died.  MINNIE died on March 3, 1938. They are buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Sarnia, Ontario.  

Children of THOMAS IRWIN GREENIS and MINNIE MARY MOFFATT are:

THOMAS RUSSELL GREENIS born February 9, 1894 in Sarnia, Ontario.  On October 1, 1917 he married CLARA ADELAIDE SMITH, daughter of Frederick and Augusta Smith.  Their marriage registration indicates he was a musician and living in the Grand Opera Hotel.

ARIEL DORIS GREENIS, born on May 8, 1906.  She married THEODORE PORTER on April 25, 1925.

BABY BOY GREENIS was born on and died on January 23, 1909 in Sarnia, Ontario.

18.  HIRAM ALBERT GREENIS (HIRAM5,DANIEL4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born on April 10, 1865.  On July 27, 1887 he married MARY ELLEN COLLINS.  MARY was born on January 9, 1867 to Henry James Collins and Mary Young.  He worked for the C.P.R for many years and become bookkeeper upon retiring .  MARY died on January 27, 1928.  HIRAM died on May 13, 1947 and is buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

HIRAM ALBERT JR. GREENIS, born on September 20, 1891.  He married MARGARET ST. CROIX on May 22, 1920 in Hamilton, Ontario.  Their marriage registration states that MARGARET was a hosiery inspector at the time and HIRAM was a "Shiffer".  Margaret is the daughter of Gabriel St. Croix and Louisa Cann and was born in approximately 1897.  HIRAM moved to Hamilton as a young man and stayed there for 30 years.  He died on December 5, 1946 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Hamilton.  They had no family.  

iv.

ELEANOR MAY GREENIS, born on July 28, 1893.  She married WILLIAM ALBERRY on December 29, 1914.  (see information on William Alberry for their children)  ELEANOR died on April 19, 1961.

v.

MARY GEORGINA GREENIS, born on November 1, 1898.  On January 1, 1927 she married ERNEST ROBERT PARSONS, born March 30, 1900.  MARY and ERNEST spent their years in Brockville, Ontario but when ERNEST died on June 21, 1962 she returned to Orangeville.  MARY died on November 1, 1975, buried in Foret Lawn Cemetery.

vi.

BEATRICE IRENE GREENIS, born November 21, 1902.  She married ROBERT HORLEY, born September 24, 1902.  They spent their married years in the old family home on Amanda Street.  BOB spent 20 years as a bee keeper.  Together they had 1 daughter.  BEATRICE died on May 13, 1970.  ROBERT died on January 26, 1955.

vii.

EVA DAISY GREENIS, born January 30, 1905 in Orangeville, Ontario.  In 1928 she married ROSS M. HAMMOND, born December 13, 1898.  They spent their married years on his family farm in Mono Township and moved to Orangeville in 1976.  They had no family.  ROSS died on August 30, 1987.

Descendants of Elizabeth Greeniaus

19.    MARY HULDAH JOHNSON (ELIZABETH5, DANIEL4, SEBASTIAN3, SIMON2, JOHANN1) was born on November 20, 1861.  On September 10, 1879 she married JOHN BARR, the son of John and Ann Barr.  JOHN was born February 23, 1852 and died on January 12, 1923.  The 1901 census states that he is a widow however I've been unable to find a death registration.

JOHN CHALMERS BARR was born July 31, 1892.  On June 11, 1912 he married ALZINA PEARL ROSSELL, daughter of Wallace Rosselle and Almeda Hitchcock.  JOHN died on October 25, 1954 and ALZINA died on October 20, 1963.

20.    WILLIAM JAMES PHENIX (LUCINDA5, DANIEL4, SEBASTIAN3, SIMON2, JOHANN1) was born on July 8, 1875 in Trafalgar, Ontario.  On July 27, 1907 in Kearney, Ontario, he married MARTHA E. LAWSON, daughter of John Lawson and Mary Moore.  MARTHA was born in approximately 1871.  WILLIAM died on November 30, 1945 and MARTHA died in 1952.  Both are buried in Kearney Cemetery.  

Children of WILLIAM JAMES PHENIX and MARTHA LAWSON are:

WINNIFRED PHENIX was born in October of 1910 in Perry Sound, Bethune Township. WINNIFRED married ROBERT LAKING.  ROBERT was born in approximately 1889 and died on July 29, 1989.  

21.    ALICE ANN PHENIX (LUCINDA5, DANIEL4, SEBASTIAN3, SIMON2, JOHANN1) was born on April 7, 1879. On April 2, 1901, in Parry Sound, she married HARRY PELLING.  He is the son of Albert Pelling and Ruth Bristow and was born approximately 1873.  HARRY died in May 1951 and ALICE died in 1961.

22.  JAMES ARTHUR GREENIAUS (DAVID5,JOHANN4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born in approximately 1852 in Toronto Township, Ontario.  On December 31, 1879, in Brampton, Ontario, he married JANET MUIR, daughter of Joseph and Mary MUIR. Sometime between 1895 and 1901 they moved their family to Vancouver, British Columbia. The 1901 census has them living in District 1 Burraard of Vancouver. JAMES died on October 25, 1930 in Vancouver, BC.  JANET died on November 3, 1935 also in Vancouver.

ARTHUR WILMER GREENIAUS was born on February 26, 1883 in Toronto Township, Ontario.  He married MINNIE DOWLER on September 7, 1909 in Vancouver, BC.  ARTHUR died on August 18, 1959 and MINNIE died on September 20, 1975 in Vancouver..

REUBEN OSBORNE GREENIAUS was born on January 31, 1890 in Toronto Township, Ontario. He married AMY GLADYS PRESTON on October 26, 1920 in Vancouver, BC.

IDA MAY GREENIAUS was born on March 19, 1895 in Toronto Township, Ontario.

v.

CHARLES E. GREENIAUS was born on June 15, 1885 in Toronto Township, Ontario.  

 

23.    DAVID LEWIS GREENIAUS  (DAVID5,JOHANN4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born on April 7, 1858 in York County, Ontario.  On November 3, 1886, in Clarksburg, Ontario, he married JENNIE MARTHA SPARLING.  JENNIE is the daughter of RICHARD and MARTHA SPARLING and was born in approximately 1859.  DAVID was a cabinet maker and lived his life in Toronto.  JENNIE died on September 25, 1889 in West Toronto Junction.  DAVID remarried on August 11, 1892 in Toronto, Ontario to CASSIE (KATHERINE) STUMP, daughter of Jessie and Catherine Stump.  DAVID died on February 1, 1920 in Tecumseth, Ontario.  CASSIE died on February 12, 1931 in Toronto.

EDWIN GREENIAUS was born on April 11, 1899 in Toronto Junction, Ontario.  He died on April 23, 1900.

EDITH MURRILL GREENIAUS was born on December 7, 1901 in Toronto Junction, Ontario.  On June 22, 1921 in Alliston, Ontario, she married WILLIAM JOHN ELLIOTT, son of  John Elliott and Carrie Walkom.

WILLIAM FREDER GREENIAUS was born on August 12, 1906 in Toronto, Ontario.

24.   GEORGE SILAS GREENIAUS (DAVID5,JOHANN4,SEBASTIAN3,SIMON2,JOHANN1) was born in approximately 1863.  He married ELIZABETH EVELINE MOUNTAIN, daughter of John and Eva Mountain, on June 29, 1885 in Toronto, Ontario.  His marriage registration states that he was a carpenter.  ELIZABETH died sometime between 1896 and 1912 when he remarried to FLORENCE WORMACOTT, daughter of Albert and Alice WORMACOTT, on March 4, 1912 in Aurora, Ontario.GEORGE and FLORENCE had no children..  GEORGE died on September 18, 1921 in Ingersoll, Ontario.
